Sverre Schyberg Olsen demonstrates confident colour combinations and aesthetic sensitivity in Aluminator Seven. Experiencing his paintings, one might question, if the artist himself has travelled through space in a time machine. Through his use of mediums his work presents articulate sharp colour fields, grounded in soft, organic and fast, edgy forms and formations, recalling cosmos and geology. His paintings takes us back to our origin and perhaps Schyberg Olsen gives us a glimpse of the universe both on a macro and micro level with his powerful expressions of colour, pace and form.
As the exhibition title reveals, there is a reoccurring choice of smooth aluminium as support. The determination in his choice of colours and methods combined with an intense gloss finish, radiate purity. His forceful strong gestures reminisce Abstract Expressionism, though, his paintings, with their well-composed sense of aesthetics, tilt the accustomed associations we might have with both the movement and the idea of the mediums themselves, as he moves beyond the tradition they suggest.
The shiny gloss in his works, offers, not only an incredible clearness of colour and composition to come forward, it also works the paintings an additional dimension in terms visual reflection. Due to this, the paintings possess both a dynamic and static quality. Life as a subject to metaphysical change is discretely imbedded in the colourful surfaces.
The clarity in the works, might present an idea of the paintings being of a digital quality, yet Schyberg Olsen work process, is manual. Observing the behaviour of mediums in relationship to one another, exploring gravity and differences in pace, he embraces chance and works in a low-tech way, as he himself argues. Living in an increasingly evolving mechanized world, Schyberg Olsen’s colour illuminations reminds us that we are subjects to the universal forces of nature.
